How many potential matches?
Erics doc just told me he has over 500 potential matches. Does that sound right? Is that an unusually high number?

What great news. That may set a record!
Note all potential matches may turn out to be full matches, since it depends on how much information they had for each potential donor and what further donor testing shows, but having many potential matches is just what you want to hear. The reason some patients find no matches but others find a large number has to do with HLA haplotype frequencies. This chart (which may be out-of-date) shows some of the most common HLA combinations. It seems that Eric (and therefore you) have "popular" HLA haplotypes. Having a common combination produces a larger number of potential matches in the donor pool because people in the pool are most likely to have that same combination. |
