Hi, the NIH has a cordblood transplant study underway for AA patients which might be worth looking into.
Regarding the expanded cord blood study you're referring to, I know of a team in Seattle who has been working hard on this, so perhaps there are other research centers doing this as well. I believe the reasoning is to decrease the time to engraftment for cord blood transplant patientss. When cord blood is used for transplants, it takes a longer time for engraftment, because cord blood cells are less mature than stem cells. The hope is that by using expanded cord blood cells, the patient will engraft sooner putting patients at lower risk for infection and possibly shorter hospital stays and likely other things... |
