Bone Marrow results.

I just pulled my husbands results from Moffitt Cancer Center and his clinical portal. They just appeared and we have not yet spoke with the doctor regarding them. Can anyone tell me what they understand from them. I hope it is what I think it is and that is good.
Chromosome Analysis Interpretation: NORMAL MALE KARYOTYPE Cytogenetic analysis of unstimulated cultures revealed a male karyotype with an apparently normal GTG banding pattern in all cell analyzed. A normal karyotype does not rule out clonal molecular alterations below the resolution of light microscopy.
Thank you for any input anyone can give.

Kathy I really don't know what that means but my cytogenetics came back normal on every BMB, then another doctor ordered micro assays on my blood and I was found to have a small chromosome deletion. The deletion was not on any of the normal chromosomes tested by FISH and was also hard to detect. I went on further and had specific gene testing and found a number of gene mutations, some were of no significance and some were associated with disease processes.

One gene mutation (homozygous) had only been seen once before and that was in a man with copper problems as do I.

There is so much in medicine that is unknown but it's advancing every day.

Thank you Chirley,

I am just hopeful at this point and I know there is more indepth testing that will need to be done. We are waiting to see if the blast have gone down..

Kathy,

I think the report tells you four things:
  1. The lab used the technique called Giemsa banding to do the chromosome analysis. This technique can identify problems, for example translocations, that are indicators of MDS.

  2. They found nothing wrong. Great news!

  3. That doesn't rule out chromosome problems that this test can't detect. That's true of almost any test they might do.

  4. Your husband is male. :)

Hi Kathy,

Good news that your husband is in total remission. Long may that continue!

Hope you don't mind if I ask a question. Your husband's age and condition sounds very similar to my fathers. I've seen you talking about the potential of a BMT. I was under the impression that BMT is only an option up to around the age of 60 years old max?

Apologies if my understanding is incorrect. No one has even mentioned the possibility of a BMT for my father as of yet. Makes me wonder if he's getting the best care.

Blessings to you and your husband.

Sidhartha,
BMT has been offered to my husband from the beginning. It does depend on health conditions. With his high risk at first they said that BMT would definitely be the way to go. he is currently being seen at Moffitt Cancer Center by Dr.Komrajhi (?). BMT used to be allowed to younger individuals however the limits have been raised and are now gauged on other factors than age. I hope your father is being seen by competent doctors, but if you have any doubts I would certainly get a second opinion.
Best wishes to you and your father.

Thank you for your insight to the results of my husband, especially 'he is male' Lol

We were notified that his blast are 3 percent. Down from 10 percent.

Kathy,

That is a great result... I'm at 3% 32 days after my BMT, and the Doctor is thrilled...
