Meaning of DNS
I was recently hospitalized in a VA Hospital. The notes list my code status as: DNI, DNR, DNS. I know what DNR (Do Not Resuscitate) and DNI (Do Not Intubate) mean but I am wondering what the DNS means. I have searched the Internet and haven't found an answer. Any ideas??

Hi Data
Maybe it means "Did Not Specify", as in they did not have your wishes for DNR or DNI. |
DNS medical meaning is...
DNS: On a prescription, Do Not Substitute. If a physician orders a particular drug and writes DNS on the prescription, that tells the pharmacist not to substitute a generic version or any other drug for the prescribed drug.
Gooogle is your friend sometimes - do a search for DNS -medical:cool: |
Thanks for the replies
They did have my wishes for DNR and DNI - they were specified in the "code status" section of my records. This wasn't related to a prescription so I doubt Do Not Substitute would be applicable. I did do a search on DNS Medical and didn't find anything related to codes such as DRR and DNI.
Thanks Data |
Hi Data. I can see why not knowing would bug you; it would me as well! I'm a n RN and DNS would usually mean Director of Nursing Service, but that wouldn't fit your context. I texted a niece who is an RN and we will see if she knows. :)
addendum: sorry, she had no other ideas either. |
Margaret, Thanks
Margaret,
Thanks!! You were exactly right - I was mainly curious. I remember in the ER the doc was asking me about CPR and intubation but I can't remember anything about something that would start with "S". Thanks again. Data |
How about....Do Not Suction? I know it caused my mother in law a lot of distress and pain when they attempted to clear her at her end of life. I think it depends on how invasive /aggressive it is.
Be sure to let us know when you find out. |
Marlene, Thanks
Marlene,
Thanks. That makes about as much sense as anything I have heard or thought of. If I ever have to go back to the VA Hospital (hope not) I will ask. Thanks again. Data |
