Prashant: VAK is correct that only a transplant can cure MDS. However, even when a patient is medically eligible and a transplant donor is available, a transplant may not necessarily be the appropriate treatment choice. Other treatment approaches may not be curative but they can be much less risky. The best choice depends on many factors.
MDS is a family of diseases of varying risk levels. It's important to know your dad's MDS classification (also known as the "subtype") because that tells you the disease severity, the risk that it will get worse, and how important it is to start treatment promptly.
To make the right treatment choice, in consultation with your dad and his doctor, you'll want to learn about all treatment choices so you can weigh their tradeoffs.
