Hi Wendy,
John has not tried any anabolic steroids for his AA. He does have very low testosterone levels though and he's going to approach it naturally as his first line of treatment. If that fails, then he's going to use a bio-identical form of testosterone. I don't know if this will effect his blood counts like the synthetic anabolic steriods but I think it may be a safer option. Both tend to "shut down" the testes own production though. Knowing John, anabolic steriods would be too much for him. He continues with acupuncture but has stopped the herbs. He did the herbs for 4 months and saw no improvement. His last CBC showed improvement in all three lines and I think that has to do with correcting some vitamin deficiencies and upping his B12,folate and B6. So he's doing really well and his counts are in pretty good shape...His total white count is getting close to normal and his ANC is in the normal range. So even with low testosterone, his counts continue to creep up. Marlene

Basic facts about Anadrol (oxymetholone) can also be found at these sites:
anadrol.comHowever, according to an RN at the National Institutes of Health, National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute, physicians at NIH may try Anadrol, but only as a last resort, when other treatments fail, and only for certain patients. When they do, the patient's counts need to be monitored very closely. The NIH does not consider Anadrol to be a first-line treatment for aplastic anemia. There were studies in past years involving oxymetholone for AA (example, PDF file, 624K) but oxymetholone is not being studied in any current NIH trials for the treatment of aplastic anemia. |
